The Bars of The Bar Crawl
For me the bar crawl is a special event. I have watched it grow from the original, a two piece voyage of discovery into the full fledged party that was last years thirty some odd people. It isn’t just the people though it is also those first few bars that get me every time. So for those of you who have never been a part of our special day and for those who just want a refresher course here is a breakdown of the first four bars on our soon to be legendary crawl.
The 1414 Club is a bar that is simply open for the geriatric OTB addicted set. It’s open from ten in the morning until around six at night. This also happens to be the major hours of business for OTB, not that I have gambled there or anything. It’s the kind of place where even though the chips could be in an open bag you still wouldn’t want them, especially when you see their collection of liquors which include Vat 69 whiskey and a bottle of Red Bull…Tequila. It does have its charms though between the early morning happy hour to their beer (bottles or cans! How awesome is that) being kept cool in nice Igloo coolers and then the most charming part of all, the bathroom that looks like it was modeled after a set in Midnight Express. Fantastic!
The Iron Works (formerly Moe’s Tavern and before that Mulvey’s) used to be a great place to catch underage drinking on the weekends. Now it’s a great place to die. I mean the only thing deader this is Yahoo Serious’s career, and I have more faith in his career making it back to its mediocre level then for this place to ever get good. Honestly though, it has videogames and for some reason they always enjoy us there so they have that going for them. Will the new owners feel the same? Well we will just have to see.
Cody’s Emerald Pub (formerly Jimmy Breslin’s) is actually owned by a friend’s father but that will in no way skewer my review. Actually this is a decent bar; it’s got a lot of room a halfway decent jukebox and a pool table as well as darts, so there is plenty to do. Besides that they have a backyard which is going to work great since we can’t smoke in bars anymore in NYC (damn it). Even before the bar switched hands we were always treated extremely well and the tradition has continued and so in return we stay there longer then any other bar but since we are too busy drinking and playing games no one really notices. Good times!
Emily’s Keyboard used to be the type of place that was good for an easy joke and then we walked in on that first fateful bar crawl day. My eyes had been opened to a brand new world. Ok you are more likely to find someone’s grandmother in this place then to find someone nice to cozy up to but at least the grannies are nice. The bar itself is nice and it may be the most patriotic place I have ever been as it seems to be decorated for the Fourth of July everyday but I kind of like that. It also has an electric dartboard which is great there but it sucks when people take the plastic darts with them and chuck them at you when you are walking to the next bar. The best part about this bar is that they also have an outdoor seating area as well as a Saturday (free) buffet. I actually can’t wait to get there!
There you go a brief synopsis of the bars of the bar crawl, of course we will be going to more but after these four I am too drunk too care. I hope you all are too!
