Mad Dog Movie Reviews
Re-Animator (1985)
(5 Mad Dogs)
Directed By: Stuart Gordon (Dolls)
Starring: Jeffrey Combs(Frightmare), Bruce Abbott (Trance), Barbara Crampton (Chopping Mall) and David Gale (The Brain)
Now here is some great viewing. Abbott is a medical student with a room for rent. In moves the newest doctor in the hospital he works at, a very creepy and nerdy Combs. Little does the student know that his new tenant is working on a formula to renew dead cells and ultimately brings the dead back to life. Let me repeat that for everyone, bring the dead back to LIFE, mwa ha ha ha!
Story: Based on a H.P. Lovecraft story, this is a very excellent blend of comedy and horror, much better in the extended version that is now out on DVD.
Characters: Combs is downright creepy and Gale is just great especially later in the movie. All in all a great job done by the cast even if the script is a bit weak in parts.
Humor: One of the funnier movies in the genre. It actually gets funnier once the experiments get going.
Nudity: within the first 15 minutes we get a sex scene ruined by a cat (why do people have pets in the room when they are having sex?) but we do get a quick shot of some boobies! Unfortunately that is the last we see of them.
Violence/Gore: This is why you come to the show people. Some of the best gore seen in a movie of it’s time.
Final Verdict: It’s parts may not be perfect but added together and you get a piece of classic cinema!
